Why Am I Always Feeling “Off”?

You wake up and nothing is wrong… but nothing feels quite right either.
You’re not in crisis.
You’re functioning.
You’re getting through the day.
But underneath it all, there’s a subtle heaviness. A fog. A low hum of irritability. Disconnection. Restlessness. Something just feels off.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you’re not “crazy” for feeling this way.
Let’s explore what might be happening.

1. Chronic Stress That Never Fully Turns Off
When stress becomes constant, your nervous system stays in a low-grade state of alert. Even if nothing dramatic is happening, your body may still be bracing and feeling that heaviness.
You might notice:
Tension in your body
Snapping at people more easily
Trouble focusing
Feeling tired but wired
Over time, this creates that vague “off” feeling, like you’re not fully settled in yourself.

2. Emotional Suppression
Many of us were taught to “keep it together.” To be strong. To not overreact.
But emotions that aren’t processed don’t disappear, they linger in the background.
If you’ve been:
Avoiding difficult conversations
Minimizing your own needs
Pushing through sadness, anger, or grief
Your system may be signalling that something needs attention.

3. Disconnection From Yourself
Sometimes feeling “off” isn’t about a big problem; it’s about subtle misalignment.
You might be:
Saying yes when you want to say no
Living on autopilot
Prioritizing everyone else’s needs
Ignoring your own values or desires
Over time, this creates an internal disconnect. You’re showing up, but not as yourself.

4. Low-Grade Anxiety or Depression
Not all anxiety looks like panic attacks. Not all depression looks like staying in bed.
Sometimes it shows up as:
Emotional numbness
Low motivation
Brain fog
A persistent sense of dissatisfaction
Feeling disconnected even in good moments
It can be subtle. And because it’s subtle, people often dismiss it — until it builds.

5. Your Body Might Be Asking for Care
Sleep disruption, hormone shifts, burnout, lack of movement, or even too much screen time can all contribute to feeling “off.”
Mental and physical health are deeply connected. It’s not “just in your head.”
The Important Question: What Is Your “Off” Trying to Tell You?
Instead of judging the feeling, try getting curious.
Ask yourself:
When did this start?
What was happening around that time?
What have I been carrying quietly?
What do I need more of right now?
That “off” feeling is often your nervous system whispering before it has to shout.
You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
Sometimes we can name the feeling ourselves. Sometimes we need support to unpack it.
Talking with a therapist can help you:
Identify patterns you may not see
Understand your emotional responses
Regulate your nervous system
Reconnect with your needs and values
You don’t have to wait until things fall apart to reach out. Feeling “off” is enough reason to explore what’s going on. And often, it’s the beginning of realignment, not something to ignore. At Triello Counselling Services we have a team of therapists that support many individuals who "feel off". We welcome you to schedule your initial consultation.
